Description
This tale of Ancient Greece is the penultimate opus in the Trojan cycle (the Iliad is the only other one of the eight in the cycle to have survived), written in verse (dactylic hexameters) and divided into twenty-four books.
The reckless Odysseus, more than a little vain, it must be said, will meet sea monsters, witches, provoke the wrath of Helios and Poseidon, go to Hell, see his companions die, but who will finally find his wife, Penelope after slaughtering her suitors, pretenders to his throne.
A month of work was necessary to do justice to this monumental work, to do the research and to create the image that brings to life the fourteen stages of the return from Troy. All the drawings are all done by hand.
In the color versions, the stages were categorized according to the book to which they belong, except for the Return to Ithaca, which is spread over three books. This final stage was broken down into three pictures in the same color.
The verse extracts are from Penguin Classics, and some of them are so impressive that it was hard to know which to choose!
The Odyssey is a multi-layered and unusual narrative, with some the location of some places disputed or imaginary, such as the Underworld. I've cross-checked the majority of specialist opinion to establish Odysseus’s supposed route and stopovers.
To the best of my knowledge, this is the most accurate version of this map ever published in English, and the French version has been a great success, especially with teachers. Italian and Modern Greek versions are currently in development.
Many thanks to my friend Andrew Wale for his help in making this English version. His proofreading and correction were a valuable help.
